Why every like comes with a reason
On Pop The Balloon you can't keep someone without saying why. Here's how keep reasons work, what people actually say, and why a like with a reason is worth more.

A like that tells you something
On most dating apps, a like is a tap. You find out someone was interested, but not what caught their eye, so the first message is a guess. On Pop The Balloon, when you keep someone's balloon, you also tell them why.
How it works
When you choose Keep on one of your daily picks, the app asks what drew you in. You'll see five reasons, picked from a longer list, such as:
- That smile was impossible to scroll past
- We're looking for the same things
- Your bio made me laugh/smile
- We have so much in common
- The way you express yourself
If none of them fit, you can write your own message instead. You can't keep someone without choosing a reason, so every keep comes with one.
What the other person sees
When someone keeps you, their reason appears under "Why they kept you" in Likes You. If they chose a reason from the list, you see that line. If they wrote their own message, you see their words. With Golden or Platinum, you can see everyone who has kept you, and why.
Why it makes a difference
- You know where you stand. "Close enough to actually meet" and "I'm attracted to your photos" are very different starting points, and it helps to know which one you're getting.
- The first message writes itself. If someone kept you for your taste in music, you already have something to talk about.
- People think before they tap. Having to say why makes people pause, which means fewer careless likes.
People really use it
In the 30 days to 18 October 2026, 99% of keeps on Pop The Balloon came with a reason, and about half were written in the person's own words rather than picked from the list.
Tips for choosing your reason
- Pick the one that's true. It's the first thing they'll learn about you.
- Be specific when you can. "Your hiking photos made me want to plan a trip" lands better than a general compliment, so write your own when something stands out.
- Keep it kind. A reason is a compliment, not a chat-up line.
When it's mutual
If the person you kept keeps you too, it's a match and you can start chatting, already knowing what caught each other's eye.
